The Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) is organising an international conference in New Delhi on the historic declaration of ‘education for all’ made by the then Travancore regent Gowri Parvathy Bhai in June 1817.
Vice-President Hamid Ansari inaugurated the conference on Saturday. The Government of Kerala and Unicef are sponsoring the conference to mark the 200th anniversary of the declaration.
Following the declaration by the Regent Gowri Parvathy Bhai in June 1817, the then government is said to have shouldered the cost of education of all citizens without discrimination. This step revolutionised the educational scenario in Kerala.
The Travancore government had allotted land to schools and colleges and thereby signifying the fact that universal education was an unfamiliar concept in most countries. Further, women in Kerala had come to the forefront economically and socially as a result of this forward-looking policy.
The Travancore announcement is believed to have been written in the old Malayalam script. It is kept in the state archives.
